Metropolitan College launches its brand new School of Shipping at “POSIDONIA 2016”
Metropolitan College launched its brand new School of Shipping, in collaboration with Southampton Solent University, a world leader in Maritime Studies including Warsash Maritime Academy, the world’s leading maritime education and training provider.
The launch of the new academic programmes took place at “POSIDONIA 2016” the biggest international exhibition in Greece for the global shipping industry, during a press conference by Mr Constantinos Rodopoulos, President of Metropolitan College, and Prof. John Chudley, Provost of Warsash Maritime Academy, Southampton Solent University.
In his welcome speech, Mr Rodopoulos mentioned: “We have the pleasure and the honor to launch today our first undergraduate courses in Shipping, in collaboration with the world leader in maritime studies, Southampton Solent University. The maritime industry is one of great significance in Greece and globally, and we are very proud of this strategic partnership with one of the world leading Universities in the sector”. Prof. Chudley, as Southampton Solent University’s official representative, expressed his satisfaction from the new collaboration with Metropolitan College, by mentioning: «As Provost of the Warsash Maritime Academy of Southampton Solent University, which this year celebrates its 70th anniversary, I am proud of the fact that this coincides with the launch of our new partnership with Metropolitan College. This is going to be a long-term and fruitful relationship and the first of the Shipping programmes we are going to work with Metropolitan College. We are really looking forward for this partnership, we value it, and I know that in two years we’ll be back, looking at greater and fantastic things».
Among the many distinguished guests from the academic and maritime business community, were Prof. Dinos Arcoumanis FREng – President of the Academic Board of Metropolitan College, Prof. David Rhind CBE FRS FBA – Chairman of the Nuffield Foundation, Prof. Graham Galbraith– Vice-Chancellor of University of Portsmouth and Mr. Nicky Pappadakis – Chairman, A.G. Pappadakis &Co. Ltd.
The School of Shipping of Metropolitan College will be offering, as of September 2016, the following Bachelors, with the accreditation of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT):
• BSc (Hons) Maritime Business
• BSc (Hons) Shipping and Port Management
Both academic courses are the only courses in Greece accredited by The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, thus ensuring the high quality of the academic services offered, as well as the fact that the course meets the needs of employers and professional bodies of the Maritime and Shipping industry. Membership of the Institute pays for itself, not only in a monetary value through the benefits it provides, but also in the progression of the members’ career.
